 High-speed transportation has reached a fast development stage, due to rapid increase in high-speed railways, urban subways, expressways, and airfields. It is estimated that by 2020, China will build 20,000 kilometers of high-speed rail network, and train speed will reach 500km/h. Therefore, safety and comfort of the travelling public become the primary requirements of high-speed transportation Thus, posing great challenges for infrastructure service performance.

In order to satisfy the demand of safety and comfort of high-speed transportation, it becomes necessary  to have a new way of looking at the  geotechnical engineering theory and technology: theory of vehicle-infrastructure-ground interaction, settlement and control standard of infrastructure, ground improvement technologies, monitoring and maintenance of infrastructure serviceability, and seismatic performance of infrastructure and so on. To provide a forum to discuss these emerging concerns the International Symposium on “Geotechnical Engineering for High-speed Transportation Infrastructure” with the theme of “Towards Safe and Comfortable High-Speed Transportation Infrastructure” will be held at Zhejiang University.
